Shirley Jackson (1916–1965) received wide critical acclaim for her short story “The Lottery,” which was first published in the New Yorker in 1948. I think we can see this clearly. I wasn't sure when I started reading the first book but quickly became immersed in the story line. She illustrates her points with pertinent anecdotes that make the book engaging to read, but the content is definitely "lite," meaning both general and thin on substance. We see it in all its flashy colours on the television screen each night as the reporters give us their big, toothy smiles. For example, she is wallowing in self-pity about the demise of her marriage without doing anything at all to save it (and no, one lame attempt at sex doesn’t count).
Or let’s look at her job. I went to the local book store and looked through the 4-5 InDesign CS5 books there, and ended up with this one.

It's a nice size for a reference book (about one inch thick), is reasonably priced, printed on quality matte paper and in full color throughout.
