Editorial : I love when older techniques are revived and refreshed, and that is the case with the Bargello quilt. I remember making my first one and marveling at how much easier it was than it looked. That quilt hangs in my cousin's home today. Ruth Ann Berry looked at ways that she could separate the moving parts in the design from the static background. She came up with four different solutions to do this: what she calls a scribble on a solid background; a scribble on a background of busy prints; the scribble and background made from different, contrasting color runs; and a solid-color splash across a series of plaids or a background of stripes. I never would have thought of plaids years past. I loved the energy that the quilts reflect. There friendship weaving a dangerous line and Alex's wife call them on it. There is very little sex and what there is feels more like a "fade to black" type of scene. The only thing I agreed with in 195 pages of drivel is the value of meditation, and his account of it is so sketchy and bizarre as to be seriously misleading.
At the end, he tells us that he wrote most of the book in six days. I've only read the first chapter so far but am IMPRESSED! with both the forthrightness and plain old correctness-type rightness of his words. His characters are well-developed, just keep in mind that the intended audience is children. Far different than the primarily super hero and horror titles of the time, this was a gritty, action filled thriller, long before books like Sin City and others came out. But Slater's dangerous attacks won't stop haunting him until he's spilled a dark secret from his past.
