The daughter of Holocaust survivors, Pearl Goodman grew up in Toronto in the 1960s. In this exceptionally original memoir, written with wry humor and a sharp satirical eye, she juxtaposes popular culture with the jarring transitions and contradictions in her and her parents' lives. Striving to make sense of her emerging identity, she invokes TV shows, ads, movies, and distinctive details of the material and ideological landscape, while interweaving them with her parents' harrowing wartime experiences of concentration and refugee camps, and the drama and uncertainty of their postwar emigration first to Israel, and then to Canada.
So, I think it's pretty good.
As a twenty something, I would recommend this book to my friends and even those still in high school. This is a very interesting book. Good surveys should do two things; they should reflect the depth of the literature on the topic and they should unite what is often an inchoate literature into a unified study. Brunetti is willing to overlook theft, tax evasion, poisoning animals, people with false documentation, etc. But for amateur entomologists, "The Natural History of Bumblebees" is a very good introduction.. Her work is informed, and teaches a great deal about, postmodern critical theory. I liked this book a lot. It actually hurts athletic performance and doesn't appear to prevent injury. Though , again Skousen practically delights in judging the man and not the work.
The last chapter is what can only be called a dated run through of right leaning American economic thinking prior to the Financial crisis that followed later 2007. i
